HISTORY

The journey and history of the SOS VOZ AMIGA helpline began on October 9, 1978, as a result of the will and persistence of Professor Fragoso Mendes, a psychiatrist and one of the founders of the Portuguese League for Mental Hygiene in 1955, now known as the SOS Voz Amiga Association.

This was the first generalist telephone helpline in Portugal, 25 years after Protestant pastor and psychotherapist Chad Varah pioneered this model of emotional support by offering his office and telephone to anyone at risk of suicide, announcing it in newspapers. This approach has seen remarkable growth, and today there are many helplines around the world, run with the contribution of non-professional and unpaid volunteers.

For over four decades of uninterrupted service, thousands of calls have been answered from all over the country. We support people in distress, experiencing acute individual, family, or psychosocial suffering, who ask for help and feel alone, isolated, unhappy, afraid, sad, in shock, or with thoughts of dying.
